Some of our 6th Class Science activities in Term 1
We've had an eventful year so far with our SESE Science studies, exploring a range of topics, from environmental awareness and care in close-to-home places such as Tipperary & Sligo, to far flung locations such as Africa, Australia and mainland Europe.
We've explored the OSI (Ordinance Survey Ireland) website and our atlases, learning how to read grids and locate features in keys.
We've learned about Urban plant environments, as well as tropical rainforests, and the work of plant parts with particular focus on the roots and their ability to absorb water. We carried out experiments to study this using celery stalks, dye and water.
In studying light and colours, we also studied the effect of mixing primary colours using paint, and have had many opportunities to paint throughout the year so far, including painting halloween pumpkins!
We've combined Maths, Science and Technology learning in becoming familiar with the school coding Minecraft program.
We've also used IT to carry out research into many SESE subject areas, most recently in our African Countries project work.
Under the strand of Materials and change, we have explored rock formations and types, with a focus on determining the characteristics of limestone using vinegar (acid).
Our engineering skills were developed during the building of our Da Vinci bridges, using pencils and loom bands.
