Science - Electricity

28th Mar 2022

For the last couple of weeks, we looked at (and investigated) how everyday items work!

In particular, we focused on the topic of Electricity.

Take a look at some of the experiments we did!:)

Experiment 1 = Static Electricity.

  1.   Blow up a balloon and rub it against the woollen jumper for a few seconds to make static electricity. Your balloon is now charged.
  2.   Place the balloon against your hair.
  3.   Observe what happens.
  4.   Next, shred the piece of paper into tiny pieces.
  5.   Hold the charged balloon high above the bits of paper.
  6.   Slowly lower the balloon high above the bits of paper.
  7.   Observe what happens.

Experiment 2 = How does a switch work?

  1.   Cut a rectangle of card and fold it in half. Fix the paper fasteners to the card as shown in picture 1. Make sure the paper fasteners touch when the card is folded. This will be the switch.
  2. Wrap one end of the piece of wire around the paper fastener. Join the switch to your circuit.
  3. When the switch is closed, the circuit is complete, and the bulb lights up. When the switch is open, the circuit is broken, and the bulb does not light up.
